MCGUINNESS Family History
Recorded in many forms including MacGenis, McGinnis, MaGennis, MacGuiness, McGuiness, McGuinness, Guiness, Guinness, and others, this is a famous name. It is arguably of both Scottish, Irish, and Manx origins, being derived from the early spelling of 'MagAonghusa'. This is considered to be an early form of the personal name Angus from 'aon' meaning one and '-gus', enterprise. As such Aonghusa means literally 'Unique enterprise'. The first bearer of the name is believed to be Aonghus Turimleach, one of three Irish brothers, who invaded Scotland in the 3rd century a.d, and gave his name to the district and county of Angus...Select Audience

Greetings from across the pond!
My great gran one Mary Maginnis was born in Much Woolton in 1855 to Michael (of Galway) and Anna Herbert. Her sister Catherine was the second and last to be born in Much Woolton as for the remaining crew, Thomas, Michael, John, Ellen, Margaret, Winnie, Elizabeth, Jane, Alice, and Sarah Ann, they all came to life in Garston. Michael and Anna were the proprietors of the Swan pub on James Street in Garston. Interestingly the daughters were the manageresses, Jane possibly the last one.
My great gran Mary would go on to marry the owner of the George Pub and Barbershop further down James St. And dad Michael was still alive in 1893 to witness the proceedings. I have current photos of both pubs but some older ones in their glory days would be appreciated! Cheers!

My great grandmother was May Anne McGuinness born in London 29 Sep 1858 and died 8 Mar 1943 in Canton, Ohio, USA. Her husband was Henry G. DeChant (1856-1926), her father was John McGuinness born in Liverpool in 1831 and died 1884 in Kentucky, USA and her mother was Mary Monks born Lancashire 1831 and died there in 1901. Her parents were reportedly married 19 Sep 1842 in Dublin and all of Mary Anne's siblings remained in England the remainder of their lives (William 1850-1934, Rose Anna Bushell 1859-1902 and Ellen Joyce 1862-1913. I would love to learn more about her immediate family if anyone can assist.
